Over 25 years and many renovations, I’ve needed every type of cabinetry imaginable. I’ve tried high-end custom joinery and nearly every flatpack cabinet range available in Australia. For kitchens, laundries, wardrobes, and storage, I now strongly prefer the flatpack route.

This isn’t just about choosing the "cheapest" option—in fact, flatpack isn't always significantly cheaper than a basic custom quote. This is about maximizing functionality for your specific budget and space. It’s about control, logic, and long-term durability. While I always recommend getting a custom cabinet quote or two for price comparison, here are the eight reasons why flatpack cabinets have won me over for good.

1. You Are the Project Manager

We’ve all heard the horror stories: a four-week schedule blows out to four months with no sense of urgency from the supplier. Using flatpack cabinets gives you ultimate control over the timeline. This is a game-changer if you are living on-site during the installation.

Want to build a single cupboard on a Tuesday night? You can. Want to smash out the whole kitchen over a long weekend? Go for it. You aren’t at the mercy of someone else’s backlog; you manage the delivery and assembly at a pace that suits your life.

2. Professional Installers Are Now Easy to Find

Twenty-five years ago, when I bought my first IKEA Pax units, it was nearly impossible to find a pro to assemble them. Today, the landscape has changed. You can easily find specialist installers through social media groups or trade directories.

Usually, they are scheduled about two months in advance, giving you plenty of time to finalise your design and get everything delivered. I find that sharing a design from a retailer’s online planner allows for a highly accurate quote, preventing any "invoice shock" at the end of the project. Many installers now even coordinate the plumbing, electrical, and tiling for a seamless "built-in" look.

3. The "Build-as-You-Go" Budget

Renovations are expensive, and custom quotes often force you to compromise on features and fittings to keep costs down. Flatpacks offer a modular financial approach.

You can start with the "backbone"—just the carcasses (frames), basic shelves, and doors. As more funds become available, you can easily upgrade. You can swap those shelves for internal drawers or replace doors with external drawer fronts later. It allows your home to grow alongside your bank account.

4. Reconfigure as Life Changes

Your needs today aren't necessarily your needs in five years. That lower cabinet currently holding baby supplies might eventually need to become a pull-out bin system or a dedicated space for heavy appliances.

Custom-built cabinets are often "set and forget"—changing the internals later is a costly nightmare. With flatpack systems, the holes are already there. If you decide a pot-and-pan cupboard works better as a pantry with ten slim shelves, you can make that swap in twenty minutes for the cost of a few extra boards. No professional labor required; just buy the parts and click them in.

Accidents happen. A pipe leaks and swells a baseboard, or a heavy pot chips a shelf. In a custom kitchen, replacing a single integrated part is a logistical headache.

With flatpack cabinetry, everything is standardized. You simply identify the damaged part, go to the retailer, and buy a replacement. This also applies to aesthetics: if your doors get worn after a decade, you can replace the fronts for a fraction of the cost of a full renovation. It’s a total refresh without the demolition.

6. They Are Infinitely "Hackable"

"Flatpack hacks" are popular for a reason—they provide high-quality basic materials for people with a bit of ingenuity. The last time I used a custom maker, I struggled to explain a desk hidden inside a cabinet with a pull-out keyboard surface. Despite drawings, the installation day was full of modifications and muttering.

In my most recent project, I hid a sewing craft cabinet within a row of wardrobes using standard flatpack frames and a few creative internal adjustments. The result was exactly what the client wanted, without the "custom" friction.

7. Boutique Fronts

If you love the logic of flatpack but want a specific high-end look, you no longer have to settle for the retailer's standard door range. There are now several specialist companies that produce high-quality, designer door and drawer fronts specifically sized for major flatpack frames. This gives you a bespoke, architecturally designed look while keeping the functional, modular skeleton underneath.

8. The Quality Is Up To You

With some additional effort, many flatpack cabinets can match or even surpass the quality of certain custom joinery. However, if your preference is for solid wood in every component of your new wardrobe or kitchen, flatpack cabinets may not be suitable for you.

The initial step is to carefully read the instructions and assemble the pieces correctly. Following that, using a more durable plywood for the back panel or applying wood glue to all the dowel joints can result in a very sturdy cabinet that will endure for years and withstand several house moves.

Final Thoughts

Flatpack cabinets have evolved from "cheap alternatives" to sophisticated modular systems. They offer a level of agility, budget control, and individuality that traditional joinery simply can't match.
